Understanding Your Septic System
Knowledge is power, and the more you know about your septic system, the better you can detect problems early and ensure the health of your system. Our certified technicians will take the time to explain how your septic system works, recommended maintenance, and any problems you need to watch out for.
A septic system typically follows this process:
- The septic tank collects all wastewater from the home, including the toilets, bath, kitchen, and laundry.
- The wastewater is held in the tank to allow solids to settle at the bottom (sludge), while oils and grease float to the top (scum).
- Wastewater that has been partially treated/separated goes to a drainage area (field, mound, etc).
- As wastewater percolates through the soil, microorganisms remove any remaining pollutants, and the filtered water gets recycled.
Inevitably, all septic systems will fail. However, a well-designed system created specifically for your property can make a big difference between one that works well for years and one that causes problems prematurely.
